Meeting with Filipino Parents'
Last night we had a very successful evening meeting with Filipino families. There was a high turnout of parents, about 45 came, some with their children. The Filipino group student leaders, Claire Barrientos, Chris Barrientos, Franz Lauglaug, and Quinn Gonzales, helped set up and facilitate.
Thank you to Ms Walshe, Mr Devereaux and Mr Herbst, who spoke about SKC, NCEA, Cambridge, and other important information about NZ education, school expectations, and how we can prepare and train our students for future higher education or careers. The open forum was held in Filipino and English, and there was a very healthy discussion.
At the end, we all said "Maraming Salamat po" to each other, which means "Thank you very much!".
We extend our gratitude to Mrs Laraga, Filipino Dean and Mrs Atabelo, Year 11 Dean, for your continued support of the Filipino school community and to everyone who attended.
Maraming Salamat po 🙏

Guidelines for Attitude to Learning
General philosophy.
The purpose of ATL feedback is so that parents and students can have real time information about how students are engaging in each subject.
The overarching objective should be to have ‘no surprises’ for caregivers.
ATL numbers should cover how students are working generally in relation to:
How they are developing the habits of an independent life long learner.
This means:
Teachers will be providing opportunities within classes for independent, differentiated learning opportunities.
ATLs will be used with the Junior reports. This will require additional weight to be given to ATL, meaning that periodically, a curriculum statement will be added to the ATL report. At the end of Term 1, the focus will be on setting goals and identifying learning challenges for the students so that we head things off before they become a problem.
Comments.
These should be specific and address immediate concerns or celebrate recent, specific achievements.
These should provide caregivers the opportunity to be able to participate in supporting their student.
These should be brief and accurate.
Only be provided for immediate and relevant issues.
What ATL’s are NOT.
They are not a method for punishing a student.
They are not a forum for diagnosing medical or learning issues e.g. suggesting a student is dyslexic
They are not a place for long term guidance such as large general statements about learning.
They are not a report which you must feel compelled to write every fortnight.
They are not a replacement for Dean involvement, discussions with HoF’s, phone calls to parents etc.
They are not a ‘restorative chat’.

Respectful Language
In today’s world, it is common to hear socially offensive language on the streets, on social media, streaming services and in some forms of modern music. While swearing is becoming more common and less taboo, the use of derogatory language or the act of swearing at someone, or about someone, is a form of verbal violence. It transgresses the usual rules of social interaction by impinging on an individual’s self-image and sense of dignity.
It is becoming apparent that some young people are being influenced by the language they hear. Proliferating the use of swear words can sometimes normalise, glamorise and desensitise their impact for young people who may misunderstand the true meaning of some derogatory terms. Whilst some students may use swearing or derogatory terms as a misguided attempt at belonging, others may use it simply because they are still learning how to moderate their language and are not accustomed to making adjustments to suit different situations.
When it comes to swearing and derogatory language, parents and schools play an important role. Parents and carers can be proactive in monitoring what their young person is viewing or being exposed to. Discussing the use of words or the origin of some derogatory terms and gaining insight into the reason behind their use of such language can help prevent inappropriate or disrespectful language filtering into the classroom or the school, which in turn helps to build more tolerant, safe and connected communities.
This Special Report offers a number of guidelines to help manage a suitable approach when discussing the importance of respectful language.
