NZ Secondary Schools Track, Field & Road Race Championships
Jack O'Neill and James (Jimmy) Miers competed over the weekend at the NZ Secondary Schools Track, Field & Road Race Championships in Christchurch.
Jimmy did exceptionally well and placed 7th in the country even though he was battling a shoulder injury. This was a real shame as he competed in Dunedin the week before with throws that would have placed him 3rd at Nationals.
Jack qualified for semis and is continuing to improve on his PBs for the 100 (12.31sec) and 200 (24.18sec) Sprints. Jack only needs to shave of shave 0.6 sec to make the Final 8 in 100m and 0.4 sec for the Final 8 in 200m.
Both Jimmy and Jack represented their school proudly and given the number of athletes from all around NZ with some international entries they both did exceptionally well.
A special thanks to coach Sue Brydges for all the help preparing the boys for Nationals and assisting on the day with warm ups, advice and motivation.
Future Blacksticks Coaching Road Show 2024
The Future Black Sticks based out of Dunedin are touring the lower South Island coaching hockey to the young players in the region. The money they raise will help them pay for their hockey endeavours for 2024. We have a good number of FBS who have come through the regional associations. There were 24 athletes selected into the FBS/ JBS program. The Coaching Roadshow is an awesome opportunity for these young athletes to give back and inspire young hockey players in this part of New Zealand and show that players from the south can be recognised and rewarded for all the hard work they put in.

The roadshow will start in Cromwell on Monday the 22nd of January and end in Oamaru on Friday the 26th January.
Cromwell - Monday 22nd January
Invercargill - Tuesday 23rd January
Gore - Wednesday 24th January
Dunedin - Thursday 25th January
Oamaru - Friday 26th January
There will be 3 sessions a day for the five days. Each session will be 2 hours long and will begin at 10.00 am with the U13 age group (Yr5-Yr8) and end at 5.30 pm with the U18 age group
U13 Age Group 10.00 am - 12noon
U15 Age Group 1.00 pm - 3.00pm
U18 Age Group 3.30 pm - 5.30pm
The players will run skills sessions to help players refine skills they already have and show new skills/techniques the players may not have seen before. There will be game elements to these sessions - as fun and enjoyment are key elements to a quality hockey session.
Otago Hockey staff - Hymie Gill and Jolene Casey will be supporting these coaching sessions. We will also offer coaching development which will be advertised soon.
The cost for the 2-hour coaching session is $60 per child. Please make payment to Otago Hockey Association. Bank details 03-0905-0460917-10, Reference Child's name

Social Media & Digital Reputation
Social media has become such an integral part of a teenager’s life. However, many miss out on some critical social skills with most communicating whilst looking at a screen instead of another person! Statistics show that 60% of 10-11 year olds are using at least one social media site, with the majority using age-restricted platforms. What kids do, post and say online is permanent and most are not mature enough to manage their own digital footprint. Friendships, relationships and even future job prospects are all put at risk.
Families need to be aware of what picture their young person is painting of themselves online. Unfortunately, many families do not see the dangers inherent of these sites, as they form opinions based on their own experience. Over the years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of primary schoolers owning mobile phones, highlighting the importance of teaching young people about the dangers of social media and the implications it can have.
In this edition of SchoolTV, families will learn how to talk to their young people about the inherent dangers of social media and how to educate their young people to be responsible users in the online world we live in.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your young person, please contact our Pastoral Care Team for further information or seek medical or professional help.
